Western State Hospital is a psychiatric hospital located in Lakewood, Washington. The facility is administered by the Washington Department of Social and Health Services and is Washington's second-oldest state-owned enterprise.

Erickson McGovern Architects worked closely with Administrators and staff from Western State Hospital and representatives from the Department of Social and Health Services to develop a program for the two ward addition.

The wards are being designed to accommodate the growing geriatric population and to improve the quality of life for all patients. New centralized spaces will also allow security staff to respond quickly as issues arise and holistically the safety of staff is to be prioritized.

Durable and maintainable materials are being used to reduce the overall maintenance cost of the facility as well as improved access to the building systems for ongoing maintenance as population shifts over time.
