Mercer Island Country Club (MICC) is a private swim, tennis, and fitness center located at the south end of Mercer Island. Erickson McGovern worked with MICC to evaluate the existing facility in 2000 to study options for renovation and expansion, and was later selected as the architect for the modernization and addition of the facility. During the design process, we worked collaboratively with focus groups including the MICC board, club members, community representatives, and Interior Designer Sue Whaley to ensure that the needs of both client and community were met in the final design solution.
The MICC now has a new entry and lobby, which also houses the pro-shop. Childcare facilities were relocated and expanded with access to an outdoor play area. The locker rooms were remodeled, and the members lounge was expanded with views to the outdoor patio and direct access to the new kitchen and food service area. A second floor addition contains a weight room, an area for cardio machines, and a multipurpose room for aerobics classes and social events. The reconstruction of the roof and exterior of the facility were also included in this project.
Located in a residential neighborhood, the facility had to maintain a residential scale and aesthetic because of its close proximity and visual connection to neighboring homes. EMA resolved outdoor lighting concerns from local residents with landscaping and lighting studies during the design process, and worked closely with the Mercer Island Design Review Committee for approvals.
